Layouts V 2.0

Here are some more of the layouts that I've been scribbling down throughout the year. I fear I have gotten into a bit of a rut in terms of composition and perspective, everything seems to end up sharing the same general design which really needs to change. It seems to be a mental block that is proving difficult to overcome, almost like I am scared to venture out of my comfort zone and experiment and just go wild. But alas, it is finally winter break and I can finally focus on my own personal projects, should be fun! And without further ado here are the layouts which I also handed in for class as part of my personal portfolio.

This Egyptian painting isn't even close to being done but I doubt I'll finish it, so figured I should post it anyways. It shows a little bit of my thought process in terms of color and atmosphere which isn't really conveyed through my sketches. Think of it as a color key.

Character and Bones and Holidays!

So today was our last day of school before winter break, boy did the first term fly by. Looking back, I am not sure if I made as much progress as I feel I should have. It could be that I just need to take some time off and take a step back from my work to put everything in perspective. Nevertheless I shall continue on and see what happens, that's all we can really do. I just finished watching Tron as a finale for the end of first term, and I must say it was quite the visually stunning movie. I would highly recommend everyone to see it on the big screen if they get the chance. The Daft Punk soundtrack was awesome too! And I want to wish everyone a great holiday and hope you all get some sleep for once, you deserve it! Anyways I hate talking so much, here is some more of my work, enjoy!

I guess I should post some character stuff since I avoid it like the plague. I really hate feeling so frustrated when I do anything involving characters, there is just something about it that doesn't click with me. I guess it doesn't help that I don't do any real practice or that I quit after five minutes of trying. Looks like I'll have to smack myself and try to get better.

As well, here is the title page and one of five pages for my bone drawing assignment. I did about 85% of it the night before so I didn't have enough time to get my concept realized. Basically I was going for a high tech laboratory creating a robot based on the human skeleton. But it's my own fault for leaving a several month long exercise until the night before. The final bone sheets had labeling as well which I found out that we needed to do after class had all ready started. Yeah it was a brutal and late night to say the least, but it felt amazingly good to have it over with.

Royal Winter Fair

So for one of our life drawing assignments we had to go to the Royal Winter Fair and draw a bunch of animals. It sounds pretty easy...theoretically at least...but animals are a lot harder to draw than I had expected due to half of them moving every two seconds. All though I started off drawing pretty horribly, towards the end I felt a lot more comfortable and got some decent stuff. I'd like to send a big thanks (again) out to a couple of my class mates (you know who you are!)who really helped me out at the fair and taught me how to draw much better animals. If it wasn't for them I'd be stuck with some really terrible drawings. I doubt they even read this but thanks girls, you saved me big time!

I feel some of my drawings are much better than others. I don't really like the horse and cow studies but I didn't have anything else I could use. I do however LOVE Llamas. Yes I would marry one if it were legal...wait maybe it is? They just have so much personality! And just for fun I included a 30-40 minute speed paint as my cover. Pai Mei Llama for the win, though I forgot his head roll thing. For some reason it has less contrast and is generally darker than when it was in Photoshop...grrrr.

In the end it was a really cool experience and I can't wait for the zoo trip in March. I did get a nasty cold out of the whole ordeal, but the epic train chase made up for it. We sprinted across the whole fair in this crazy fog and literally made the train by about 15 seconds, definitely as close a call as you can get.

Thanks for taking a look...until next time. *swoops away*

Layout Skeches v.1

Hey...it's me...again... and here are some layout sketches! These are basically what I like to do when I have some free time at school or just feel like procrastinating on school work, which happens way way way too much. But yeah, these were all done within the first month of school, and I'll probably do more updates like this every few months, but hopefully with much better stuff. I have realized that the camera angles are pretty static in all of these, so my newer work should look much more dynamic and I'll be experimenting a lot more with composition and crazy perspectives. These are also meant to be very rough and just quick sketches for things that I may want to push further on in the future, such as digital paintings. And yeah...thanks for taking a look!

Layouttttt!

So here's the finished version of our first layout assignment! I was planning on doing a digital version but decided I should focus on bigger and better things for the moment. The scanner killed the quality quite a bit, the real version is a lot less grainier, but alas...there is not much I can do about it.

Hands and Feet

Gah haven't done any updates in sooooo long. My Apologies! At some point I'll do a massive update when I have some more worthwhile stuff. I have had pretty much no time to do any digital painting lately which makes me quite sad, seems I'll have to fix that >=)

Anyways here are the hands and feet that I submitted for my life drawing class.

Last digital version, here we go!

Yep, so this is like 99% sure the last digital version of my tattoo. Next step is to bring it to the tattoo artist and get it modified into something workable. I'm a bit worried that there will be significant changes, but I'm sure in the end that the outcome will still be awesome. Wish me luck!

My tattoo!

Just for the sake of an update I'll post a really rough version of my tattoo. I figured it's a good opportunity to show a bit of my process work as well. This will probably be the general design I am aiming for, and of course everything will be cleaned up. I am not sure if I am going to make this colored, black or white, or perhaps go for a hybrid...only time will tell.

Skycaptain

Here's a small update. Just another study....this time trying to incorporate a bit of a background that's relevant rather than something abstract. I think it's about time that I get back to working on environments and do something that's not a figure painting!

Ladies...and the grim reaper.

I swear it is purely coincidental that the majority of these posses a firearm or other potentially lethal item...I swear! The red is also a coincidence. These are in order they were done, the tribal woman being the earliest. This concludes my big update of some of my past works, anything posted from here on is new stuff!

Statues!

Portrait and an eye.

I have always had trouble with faces, so thought it would be a good place to start. Not the best reference photo though, a little too over lit. I should really do a bunch more of these...

Still life's and a skull.

Yeah I got bored of fruit pretty fast, so next I moved onto a few still life's, and this skull. I don't really like the skull, not enough definition in general and some edges turned out hazier than I wanted. Oh well, a lesson learned and onto the next piece.

Digital painting...the studies commence!

So after I was done my portfolio I couldn't seem to pick up a pencil anymore. After losing hope with my digital paintings, I decided to stop doing complicated illustrations, slapped myself, and got to the basics. The following batch of posts will show my progress in the last month and a half, compared to my first five or so paintings which were done within a 2-3 year time frame. I cannot stress enough to anyone who wants to get into digital art to start off with simple subject matter and practice rendering. It will save you a lot of time and frustration. Anyways enough of my blabbering, here are my first set of studies, just plain old fruit.

Return of the personal pieces.

The eye painting was used in my first portfolio as well, I didn't leave myself with any time to do a new personal piece so threw it in there because...well...I had no choice.
